Tunisia: More than 8 million GSM subscribers

TUNISIAONLINENEWS- The  report issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) which was published on “the information economy” explained that the world is linked to a high degree to mobile phone networks more than ever before.

The number of participants in these networks by 2008 is 4 billion users compared with 1.4 billion in 2003. Tunisia scored 8.75 million subscribers for mobile phone networks, by 2008 representing a growth of 35% since 2003.

Mobile phones are owned by the poorer population groups in the world. Cell technology has enabled poor African countries to bypass the messy infrastructure and expensive start-up costs of setting up fixed-line systems. As a result, wireless technology is reaching isolated rural areas where fixed lines were never able to penetrate: while the number of African cell phone users reached 282 million in 2008.

The most prominent of the expansion of the network involved the emergence of new uses of mobile phone such as obtaining information on agricultural and financial markets, and other identification on weather conditions.

Cell phone sales are still booming worldwide, driven by longtime owners clamoring to update their phones and new buyers wanting to get on the phone-owning ladder.
