Tunisian 12-Baby Pregnancy Claim Pronounced False

TUNIS, Tunisia — A Tunisian health official says a woman who claimed she was pregnant with 12 babies underwent a medical examination that showed she is not pregnant.

The official says the 30-year-old teacher from central Tunisia had agreed to the ultrasound exam after initially refusing.

Doctors concluded she is experiencing a mental condition called a "phantom pregnancy" by which women can believe they are pregnant and develop some symptoms.

The official spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

The woman had claimed she was expecting six girls and six boys.

Health experts say a 12-baby pregnancy is next to impossible.
