Former Boston Marathon Champ Moses Tanui Plays Record 117 Holes Of Golf For Charity

By JONATHAN KOMEN   Moses Tanui is a man of many firsts. Marathon two times, became the first man on earth to run the half marathon under one hour and was among the first crop of Kenyan athletes to win the IAAF Grand Prix races.

And barely six months into his new sport of golf, Tanui has hit the headlines again.

At the weekend at the Eldoret Club’s nine-hole golf course, he teamed up with golfer Andrew Chelogoi for a marathon golf tournament to help raise funds for needy children at the Irish-owned Patrician Brothers Children’s Home in Eldoret.

Tanui, a former military sapper, beat huge odds to complete a historic 117 holes (approximately 46.6 kilometres) from dawn to sunset!

Watching him take on a stellar field with his soldier-style play – hitting as if firing a rifle quickly and without setting targets — was simply breathtaking.

His form and stamina left top Eldoret golfers, among them Chelogoi, Ajay Shah and Linah Shah, gasping for breath as others felt by the way side.

Tanui, a handicap 21 golfer, soldiered on to complete his 117 holes in 11 hours and 45 minutes.

The couple of Ajay Shah (handicap 18) and Linah Shah (19) wound up second and third respectively, timed at 11:50 and 11:53 respectively.

Chelogoi, a handicap four, could not take the heat, dropping off at the 108th hole.
