If you’ve always dreamed of your own garden and have finally got one, you probably wonder how to start gardening the right way. “How to decorate the garden?”, “Which are the essential gardening tools?”, “Which trees and plants are better suited for a garden?” are just some of the questions amateur gardeners have to answer.
Draw a plan
Before you buy plants or add items to your garden, decide on the look you want your garden to have and plan accordingly. Create a scheme of your garden and arrange everything you want your garden to have: a swimming pool, a fountain, a lounge area, a grill, paths, and, of course, plants. Most plants grow to be taller and wider, than they initially are which is why you need to take their final size into account, allowing space between different plants, so that they don’t clash when they reach the next stages of their growing process.
Know your area
The region you live in has a major effect on what can grow in your garden successfully, as not all plants have a similar reaction to the weather conditions and soil of your region. If you’ve never gardened before, it can be hard to determine these specific parameters on your own, but you can talk to experienced gardeners and farmers of your area and ask them for advice on gardening - no one knows better about the local conditions than them.
Start easy
It can be tempting to buy lots of gorgeous or even exotic plants to place them all over your garden, but without the necessary amount of planning and knowledge you will likely be disappointed by the result. To learn the basics of gardening and know your gardening conditions better, start with plants that can grow everywhere - for example, vegetables like carrots and potatoes are a popular choice among beginners as they are relatively easy to grow.
Water regularly
Every type of plant has its own watering schedule, so it’s better to keep notes on your plants and how often they need to be watered. If your garden consists of plants that have the same watering schedule, make sure you give them enough water. Water should reach their roots and not just be soaked up by the surface. Pay special attention to brand new plants, as their undeveloped roots may need more water and more frequent watering compared to older plants.
